From Humble Beginnings to Community Cornerstone

Feeding Hope & Building Community

Every night in Indianapolis, 18,000 kids go to bed without dinner. That’s because the food insecurity rate in Marion County is 19.2%, about 5 points above the national average, according to a 2014 Feeding America study. This means that 1 in 5 people doesn’t know where their next meal will come from or when they will get it. Hoosier Muslims decided to make a difference.

Humble Origins, Big Impact

Founded in 2011 by the Indianapolis Muslim Community Association, the food pantry at Masjid Al-Fajr started with $400 a month and has grown to serve over 450 people each Sunday. It supports a diverse community, including many immigrants, and is crucial during Ramadan, when nearly 200 families receive aid at each event.

Social Justice and Community Spirit

Established in 2011, Masjid Al-Fajr's food pantry has become a center for community cohesion and pride, involving Muslim youth and local students in volunteer work that embodies social justice and Islamic values. The pantry's contributions were honored in 2014 with a Community Service Award.

Help Us to Feed Our Neighbors

Requiring an annual budget of $35,000, Masjid Al-Fajr’s pantry uniquely offers essential toiletries alongside food, addressing a common gap in typical food pantry services. This approach helps alleviate the stress of constant need among the poor, aiming to provide enough supplies to last a week.

Volunteering is part of Islam
